Mission & Programs
Mission:
Minor Arcana Press empowers overlooked and outsider authors and artists through publication, publicity, and community.
Vision:
We envision a writing community that is diverse and connected, where weirdness is celebrated and rewarded.
Our Work:
It's simple, really.
- Identify and support the work of underrepresented writers and artists from a diverse range of backgrounds and styles, and
- Build community among underrepresented writers and artists in Seattle.
Books: Minor Arcana Press finds extraordinary and invigorating writers whose manuscripts have been overlooked or repeatedly rejected by other publishers. We pair them with provocative book cover artists to create beautiful books. We specialize in ekphrastic anthologies and single-author books by "outsider" authors, including geeks, spiritual minorities (such as mystics, polytheists, etc.), and romantic/gender/sexual minorities such as LGBTQ authors and the fetish community.
Community Writing Circle: Community Writing Circle is a monthly public gathering that builds community through collaborative writing practice. At CWC, writers of all ages, genres, and experience levels meet as equals. Guest writers facilitate short workshops which are often participatory or collaborative, allowing participants to engage in the writing process and share their work in a supportive environment. The first Community Writing Circle was held in April 2015.
Events: We love to throw a good party. Minor Arcana Press events are designed to bring writers and readers together in community. We host book launch parties, readings, and other performances with free or pay-what-you-can admission. Most events are held in Seattle, WA.
We are quite interested in meeting anyone dismissed for being “too weird.”
History:
Founded in 2012 by Allison McEntire and Evan J. Peterson, Minor Arcana Press began as the poetry imprint of McEntire’s Squall Publishing. Now a volunteer-run program of Old Growth Northwest, MAP publishes individual authors’ manuscripts as well anthologies, including Drawn to Marvel: Poems from the Comic Books, the world’s first anthology of superhero and comic book themed poetry, featuring 139 contributors. Our volume of LGBT monster stories, poems, and artwork, the Lambda Literary Award finalist Ghosts in Gaslight, Monsters in Steam: Gay City 5, raises funds to provide free HIV testing in King County, Washington in partnership with Gay City Health Project.
